About the Author
Mic Gunderson has been in EMS for over 30 years with third-service, fire rescue, private and military EMS organizations. He is the President of IPS — an systems and process design and improvement firm that specializes in services to EMS, fire rescue and healthcare organizations. He serves on the faculty for the Masters in Emergency Health Services degree program at the Department of Emergency Health Services, University of Maryland — Baltimore County, where he has taught EMS system design, ambulance service contracting, and quality management. He is a course developer and instructor for the EMS Quality Management Course at the National Fire Academy. He has served on the editorial boards for several peer-reviewed EMS journals, including Prehospital Emergency Care, Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, and the EMS Management Journal. Early in his career, he developed a interest in research working in a shock and resuscitation research laboratory at a medical school, which led him to start the first peer-reviewed EMS journal, which later evolved into Prehospital and Disaster Medicine. He served for 15 years on the faculty of the National Association of EMS Physicians’ National EMS Medical Director’s Course. Mic is a frequent lecturer at EMS conferences across North and South America and has had his work published extensively in both peer-reviewed and trade journals.
Jeffrey T. Lindsey, Ph.D., EMT-P, CHS IV, EFO, CFO, is the Chief Learning Officer for Health Safey Institute. He is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Health Services at The George Washington University and St. Petersburg College. He retired from the fire service as the Fire Chief for Estero Fire Rescue in Estero, FL. He has authored a number of textbooks for Brady Publishing.
Dr. Lindsey is an experienced leader, educator, lecturer, author, and consultant in emergency services. He earned his doctorate and master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from USF. He holds a bachelor's degree in Fire and Safety Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an associate's in Para-medicine from Harrisburg Area Community College. He also has earned his Chief Fire Officer designation and completed the Executive Fire Officer program.
Dr. Lindsey has been involved in the emergency services industry since 1980. He has a diverse background with experience as a paramedic, firefighter, 911 dispatcher, and educator. He has served in various leadership roles, including fire chief. He is an associate member of the Prehospital Research Forum, representative to the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education EMS degree committee, liaison for the IAFC EMS section to ACEP, and has held a number of other appointments through his career. He served on the inaugural National EMS Advisory Council and was the safety chairperson of the Council. He is a past member of the Sate of Florida EMS Advisory Council, vice-chair of the Florida Fire Chief's EMS section, NAEMT Governor representing Florida, board member of NAEMSE, and Chairperson of the Strategic Planning committee for the Lee County Fire Chiefs Association.
