I have read Peter Swanson's The Kind Worth Killing and very much enjoyed it. I liked it so much that it is the reason I read Before She Knew Him. I think this book is even better. Anyone who likes a mystery will like this book. I don't usually put much time in trying to figure out an ending. Sometimes the ending is so obvious that it makes the book too predictable to enjoy. I did not see this ending coming. I read other reviews that said there were clues that gave away the ending. I must be too dense to have seen them. I found the ending unexpected. Again, if you like a good mystery, you will enjoy reading Before She Knew Him.

Two married couples meet and realize they have a lot in common. Until they don't. What starts out as a possible budding friendship quickly becomes a game of cat and mouse. A chance meeting leads to a dinner which leads to a suspicion of murder.

4.5 Stars!Hen and Lloyd meet Matthew and Mira at a neighbourhood block party. This encounter leads to an invite to the latter couple’s for dinner, and at the close of the evening, Mira invites her guests on a tour the house. In Matthew's study, Hen notices a fencing trophy that looks exactly like the one that went missing when Dustin Miller – a young man from the neighbourhood she and Lloyd lived three years ago – was brutally murdered. Is it a coincidence, or, is she living next door to a killer? And, more importantly, does Matthew suspect that Hen knows what he is?An entertaining, absorbing exploration into the damaged human psyche, with an emphasis on head games, deception, troubled and abusive relationships, and male dominance, all of which had me constantly questioning the reliability and trustworthiness of all the narrators.Hen's history of bipolar, while it did factor in, I was pleased the author didn't have her spiralling into the depths of depression, desperately trying to convince those around her that she’s living next door to a murderer, and then not being believed due to her disorder. It's been done to death as of late. Instead her character sank to a whole new level of bad decisions and emotional instability, as she continuously took risks, placing herself in dangerous situations, falsely believing that she was safe.The majority of the twists left me stunned and excited, wanting more, except for the reveal at the 70% mark which was somewhat deflating, and in my opinion not needed. She is bipolar and has had a bad experience some years ago with a murder of someone that was close to her at that point. But she seems to be on the right meds with her condition controlled and has found happiness with Lloyd and with her work. This was until she and Lloyd in their process of meeting neighbors are invited to Matthew and his wife's home. Hen sees a sports trophy displayed which she is sure belonged to the person murdered years ago and realizes that Matthew is probably the murderer. Certainly this recognition would normally provide the ingredients of a great story with Hen reporting her suspicions to the police and than later confronting Matthew as he actually murders another man. But Mr Swanson takes us far beyond one crime as the reader is introduced to Matthew's psychotic brother Richard, Lloyd's affair with another woman and her murder, and a probable description of the crime occurring years ago that Hen was privy to. A convoluted set of events certainly but put together by a master of the genre and bringing a great story and some sleepless nights to a fascinated reader. A MUST read if you are sending your kid away to School. Got me thinking, I did a lot of extra research because after reading this I had a sense of what questions to ask. Had I read this 7 years ago, I could have saved a LOT of angst and anger. I also STRONGLY suggest getting a College Loan consultant PRIOR to going away and signing the dotted line. They are worth every cent. I could have saved $20,000 for my son had I had this book and a consultant prior to him going to school.

Very informative and to the point. No nonsense, no feelings, only reality. It was such a great read that I read it in a single sitting. Every child in America should receive this book on their 17th birthday. It would save millions from a terrible reality crashing down on them four/five years later when they are in tens of thousands of dollars in debt and have no job prospects. Because of Mr. Clarey, I went from intending to major in the largely useless "Cognitive Science" to Electrical Engineering. My future is bright now and much of that is thanks to him. Read it.

This book gives you an objective assessment of the payback on a college degree. Which degrees have a positive future net benefit and which ones are likely to impoverish you. Do you want to spend $100,000 on a liberal arts degree and then spend your post graduation years slinging coffee? Or, do you want to get a stem degree that is actually in demand, hint before committing figure out if your particular STEM degree is in demand. OR go to trade school for an in demand trade for a small fraction of the price of an inflated traditional degree where most of your time is spent in a left wing indoctrination program.

If there are any real criticisms of this book it's these:Somethings got passed the editor and so some formatting and typo issues are glaring.The book is fairly timely, so it's advice won't all be applicable in a decade. Though this is both a plus and a minus.The shifts from serious to sarcastic tones aren't clear until after reading the sporadic facetious sentence. This makes jokes (which I'm sure would work in the audio book version) fall flat in print.Really though, it's an easy read with good advice and recommended for the junior or senior in high school (which is the intended audience).

Clarey is blunt and not especially nice about the things he says about "worthless" degrees, basically anything that isn't a degree in the STEM fields or in the fields of accounting or actuarial science, or training and education that results in a usable and valuable skill (e.g. plumbing or auto repair). His sardonic wit had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion, but the things he says are true: most college degrees offer a nice piece of paper suitable for framing and precious little else. This should be required reading for students in high school who are contemplating spending four years of their young adulthood and thousands of dollars they don't have and will have to pay back. The book loses a star for lack of editing, but it didn't bother me: Clarey makes his point, and it's a good one.

Do yourself or your kids a favor and read this book. Mr. Clarey makes clear in a playful, sarcastic, yet lucid way that you cannot expect to waltz into a paper-making factory (AKA universities), choose any major, and except to be magically successful after completing the requirements for the degree. This book influenced the trajectory of my life so far, with great results (I chose a great degree that is also useful in the world). His advice concerning graduate school is relevant, as well.

I am facing this critical moment right now. I moved out on my own fresh outta HS when I was 18 and was working a full time job. I took a cc class here and there but also moved from city to city and I'm 29 now with a few credits under my belt. I switched from Business Econ to Accounting. I don't wanna go into debt. I love learning but totally agree I don't need to go into debt to learn.

To be clear this book gives people a showing of the consequences that you can face in picking your degree, which i think is sorely lacking in today's world. Besides that I think it does lean more to stem fields, but again the main goal is making money in this book. If your a person about to go to college and needs a little bit of a heads up about the degree your going to pick then pick this up on kindle. Otherwise I will warn people there is a bit of a political element to this book that can be seen as right or centrist leaning, but I will say that what he is saying is at the very least reasonable with some evidence. Save yourself some money and think over your choices by picking up this cheap book. That's my two cents.

Michelle Magly is a lesbian writer living in Alaska with her loving partner. She has discovered that the frozen tundra makes excellent inspiration. Michelle currently has one short story, "Heart," featured in the 2012 Understory anthology from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She also released her first novel, All the Pretty Things, in 2013 and will release Dark Horizon in March, both as a collaborative effort with Rae D Magdon. When not writing, Michelle hikes, snowboards, skis, and plays a lot of video games. Aside from her partner, Michelle shares her life with her loving cat. Rae D. Magdon is a writer living and working in the state of Alaska. Over the past few years, she has written several lesbian-themed novels, including Dark Horizons, The Second Sister, and her first published work, All The Pretty Things. She enjoys writing fantasy and science fiction, in addition to modern-day romances. When she is not writing original fiction, she (wastes) spends her time dabbling in (unapologetically smutty) romantic lesbian fanfiction. Her favorite fandoms are Law & Order: SVU and Mass Effect.
