The problem with this book is that it does not flow well. It is just a series of multiple choice questions with answers. Even the subject matter for the questions is not arranged in a sequential manner. That means that you might have to bounce all around to learn about a particular topic and even then it just gives the answer to the question rather than educate. What I did was photocopy sections and carried them with me for airplane reading or while waiting for someone.If you want to practice questions the better option is to download the ABFM app for your phone or tablet and also do the questions on the AAFP web site. These questions are blueprints for the Boards.Here is what I did:1.Bought an older edition (2016) of Current Medical Diagnosis and read selected important topics.2.Did all the Board review questions on the AAFP web site. ( This is free for members)3.Downloaded the ABFM app and did a couple of 10 question sets every morning.(The app is free)4. Downloaded the in-service tests with answers for the past 3 years from the ABFM web site. ( This is free too)5. Yes, I did plod through this book also but it was the least helpful.I received a high score in the Boards...and I saved the money that I would have spent going to a Board prep course !
I am so glad I chose this book to prepare (cram) tor the ABFM exam. Took my exam two days ago and answered a lot of questions correctly because similar ones were covered here. If I could do it all over again, I would have just started studying sooner so I could have gone through the entire book.
I used this as my primary sudy guide for the exam in November 2017. In addition I used the MKSAP 16 books to review internal medicine subjects. I purchased the MKSAP books on eBay.MKSAP 16 books were very helpful.I started about 8 weeks out from the exam reading and highlighting different chapters within this book. I reread several chapters again and highlighted in a different color.I used the ABFM website to access the in-service exams. I did 4 of these exams as a prep and to get an idea of the type of questions.The exam questions themselves were written quite different from the in-service exams. The in-service exams are helpful but should not be used as the only source for studying.I did quite well on the exam. I walked out of the exam very unsure if I even passed it. I don't believe that the exam reflects what knowledge and experience is really needed to be a family medicine physician.
I purchased this to aid studying for my family medicine boards. I purchased this in january of 2017, and went through it in 2 months, and kept track of anything I did not feel comfortable with and researched that more thoroughly on uptodate. I also took 3 intraining exams and did 600+ questions in addition to this. I received my results and passed, and indeed did better than I did when I initially certified. I think that this book was quite thorough, and hit on a lot of highlights in family medicine and was quite useful for review. However, I would also supplement review with the intraining exams and previous board questions (which are available as an app) as well. I would say that reviewing the various societies' guidelines is also quite useful. Overall I am very glad I purchased this, as I can continue to have my certification and work. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to do a self study for review.
I just took the board exam on 11/15/16. I used the 4th edition of Graber and Wilbur as my only exam prep and I am so grateful. Almost everything that came up on the test was reviewed, and often given emphasis, in this book. 7 years ago I took a board review course and I would say that this is the better, and far less expensive, way to go. I also feel like I learned a ton of clinically important material. I have been in solo practice the past 6 years and my knowledge base had definitely been getting somewhat stale. I greatly appreciated the authors' attempts to keep a sense of humor throughout the book, because let's face it, studying for the boards is a dry endeavor.I can not recommend this book enough. Good luck on your boards!
This is the second time I have used this book for my Board Review. My most recent Board test was after I had been working in a less-generalized practice for multiple years, so I was a little worried about knowing what I needed to know to pass the test. I used this book along with the AAFP Board Review course - 2 excellent sources. I passed with a comfortable cushion. This book was informative, funny, and I would definitely purchase it again.
